The South African Neurodevelopmental Association Therapy (SANDTA) is a voluntary association of therapists who have a special interest in Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT). SANDTA offers training in the NDT/Bobath approach to all allied health professionals with special interest in paediatric and adult neurological conditions. Through post-graduate training courses in the NDT/Bobath approach along with regional workshops, SANDTA offers opportunities for continued professional development. Furthermore, SANDTA supports community outreach in order to support caregivers and family members through community projects and caregiver training. SANDTA is an associate member of EBTA, the European Bobath Tutors Association.

The South African Neurodevelopmental Therapy Association (SANDTA) is a voluntary  association of therapists who have a special interest in Neurodevelopmental Therapy (Bobath/NDT).  SANDTA offers training in the Bobath /NDT concept for allied health professionals which includes post-graduate courses and workshops which are all accredited as CPD activities.
The courses and workshops are designed to:

  • Develop participants’ understanding of the Bobath/NDT concept and relate this to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF and ICF-CY)
  •  Promote Evidence-Based Health Care in the treatment of children with cerebral palsy and related conditions, and adults with acquired brain injuries.

The Bobath/NDT concept continues to evolve based on the evidence emerging through new theories, models, research and information in the movement science. The individual’s abilities and impairments are identified and addressed in relation to participation in functional activities. The Bobath/NDT concept offers a hands-on, problem-solving approach with interventions involving handling and guidance of movement to optimise function.

A Bobath/NDT certified therapist works in collaboration with clients, families, caregivers and other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive individualised treatment programmes based on the concept and directed towards specific agreed goals.

The mission of SANDTA:

The purpose of the Association is to promote the unique principles of the Bobath / NDT concept by:

  • Delivering specialised clinical training to health care professionals
  • Providing clients and their families with education, resources and information
  • Supporting clinical research
